Q: How much should i sell my ford explorer for ?
Its a 2002 ford explorer xls with around 150,000 miles on it. The transmission is about to slip and the passenger window does not roll down. I know some people that wants to buy it but how much does it worth ?

A: You might be able to get around $4000 for it, just disclose to the buyer about the transmission as it will be a negotiating factor.

Q: Can I put a different size tires on my Ford Explorer without hurting mileage?
I have a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT with 23575R15 tires. What other sizes can I put on it without affecting the mileage or maybe improving gas mileage? I’m looking at snow studs as well as all weather tires. Thanks
The only reason I would want to put a different size on is because I’ve been looking at used studs and some are almost the right size, I just wanted to know if they would work. thanks for the info, i checked out tirerack.com and it is very good site.

A: On a 2000 Ford Exploder – the model notorious for overheating left rear tires, blowing them out in spectacular fashion resulting in loss of vehicle control and a roll-over – I would never recommend changing the tire size. You could only make it worse.

Q: How important is the black rubber plug on the bell housing of a 2003 ford explorer?
I have a 2003 ford explorer and I recently had the transmission rebuilt. When I collected the truck I noticed a small amount of oil/transmission fluild around the black rubber plug on the bell housing on the transmission and upon closer examination I found that the rubber plug was damaged(it had a hole in it). Should I be concerned? Should I take the truck back for them to replace this plug?

A: The plug is there so it can be removed and the torque converter and flex plate can be more easily examined. The part should have been replaced if it was damaged, and it is not unreasonable to go back and ask that they replace it. If the hole in it looks like it just wore through, then its defective, if it looks like it may have been drilled through, then it is probably to allow fluid to drain that would otherwise sit and collect in the bell housing.

We have a 1999 Ford Explorer Sport, and the drivers’ side lock has stopped unlocking when we press the button – you have to crawl through the passengers’ side and pull the handle to open the door. My father said that he could fix it if he had a schematic of the locking system, but I can’t find it online. Could anyone provide me with one, or advie pertaining to the situation?

Q: What should a repair shop charge on average for repairs to a 99 ford explorer sport?
I’ve got a 99 ford explorer sport. The front driver side lower control arm bushing has apparently gone bad and my shocks on both sides may possibily be going as well. While I could do the job myself probably it’s also an issue of time and not being totally familer with vehicles enough to ensure I’m doing everything right.

So on average, what would a repair shop normally charge for parts and labor on this type of work?

A: From the dealer, with everything you list, the front shocks, the control arm will have to be replaced as a unit, since the bushing is part of the control arm, and an alignment. A ballpark figure for your repair from the dealer is 515.00 for the total, plus tax

Q: What percentage tint comes factory stock on the rear windows of the 2005 Ford Explorer XLT?
I have a 2005 Ford Explorer and I want to tint the front windows the same percentage as the rear windows. Does anyone know what that percentage might be?

A: it depends on if you have the tinted windows or the privacy glass?privacy glass is 20%- tinted windows are 35%

Q: How much would a tune up be for my 99 ford explorer?
I have a 99 Ford Explorer and I was thinking about getting a tune up for it. It has a v8, I don’t know if that increases the price or not. I was thinking about getting oil, an oil filter, spark plugs, and well basically the works.

A: Yeah V-8s are a little more because they have more plugs and wires. YOU should be able to get a major tune-up (spark plugs, wires if needed, air & fuel filter) and oil and filter change for around 200-280 if they don’t find anything unusually wrong with your truck. Call around to a few places and get their prices and ask if they have any tune-up specials. If there is a Pep Boys near you they are sometimes cheaper than the FIrestone or Goodyear type stores.

Q: where is the tran fluid dipstick located on a 2006 ford explorer?
I work for a security team at the local mall. We have a 2006 Ford Explorer that we use for vehicle patrol. Every morning we go out and do vehicle inspections however we have never been able to find the dipstick to check the transmission fluid. We’ve looked all over the engine trying to find the stick. I’m wondering if anyone knows where its at on this car. Help would would be great.

A: According to page 312 of your digital owners manual ( http://www.motorcraftservice.com/pubs/content/~WO6EXP/~MUS~LEN/41/06expog2e.pdf ) there isn’t one.

TRANSMISSION FLUID
Checking automatic transmission fluid
The automatic transmission does not have an underhood transmission
fluid dipstick.
Refer to your scheduled maintenance information for scheduled
intervals for fluid checks and changes. Your transmission does not
consume fluid. However, the fluid level should be checked if the
transmission is not working properly, (i.e., if the transmission slips or
shifts slowly) or if you notice some sign of fluid leakage.
Transmission fluid should be checked and, if required, fluid
should be added by an authorized dealer.
Do not use supplemental transmission fluid additives, treatments or
cleaning agents. The use of these materials may affect transmission
operation and result in damage to internal transmission components.

Q: How to hook up an air horn to a 200 Ford Explorer?
I bought a nice air horn and would like to hook it up to my 2000 Ford Explorer, the air horn is 12 volts. On my fuses though, they say 32 volts, does anyone know how to hook this up? I want to keep my factory horn, and have a push button in the dash, please help, thanks.

A: Run a wire stright from the battery, have a fuse on the wire and then have it going to a switch(autozone, advanced auto parts, or summit racing). Then have your “out” power going to the air horn. Dont forget to ground all the wires.

Q: Is there a problem with my 2002 Ford Explorer transmission?
My Ford Explorer is out of warranty and has 40,000 miles on it. When I get it up to 25 mph, but no faster, I hear a thud like it is shifting hard in the transmission. Before I take it to a mechanic so they can lie to me and tell me I need a new transmission, has anyone else had this problem?

A: If you have 40k on it now would be the time to have a transmission service done on it , that may solve your problem and its like $30.Any oil change place can do that and its cheaper than a dealer. It sounds like its the U- joint ,also not very expensive . I would look at that first, just grab the drive shaft jerk it and twist it you’ll know if its worn.

Q: What does the 4X4 module for 2002 Ford Explorer look like?
My 2002 Ford Explorer started jerking when it hits 20-35 mph. and uphill. Have heard lots of suggestions, that it is the tire size, transmission, and possibly the 4X4 module. Tried to put the car into 4X4 high and the jerking stopped and it would not go into 4X4 low. Do not want to pay $800.-$1000. to be fixed until I can research about the module.

A: The module would not cause the jerking. The low function will not work unit the truck is in neutral and speed below 5 mph. The jerking could be engine, transmission, transfer case, rear end. Putting the truck in 4×4 could have changed the load on the engine. I would suggest getting the truck diagnosed by a shop. If it is an engine performance issue or misfires there should be evidence of it in the ECM. If it is a transfer case or transmission problem an examination of the fluid should give some indication if there is something wrong with them. It sounds like you have gotten a lot of info, but It is really hard to diagnose something like this without looking at it. Call around, some shops like Aamco and others will diagnose vehicles for free and give you an estimate for the needed repairs.

Q: Why does The Rear Sensor on My ford Explorer no longer works?
I have an 03 Ford Explorer and the rear sensors just stopped working one day…it has a light by the steering wheel that says it’s OFF I turned it back ON however it goes back to OFF every time i shift gears. What do you think is going on and how do I fix it?

A: the sensors only work when the vehicle is in reverse….to test it
place a trashcan be hind the vehicle back up to the trashcan if no alarm sounds then 1 or more sensors are bad

Q: Is Ford Explorer a good car for my first car ? I am 16 just got my license. What is the most popular color ?
I like the Ford explorer and I am thinking of buying it for safety, styling, and handling. But I need to know if it is a really good car with low cost maintenance.

A: thats a really good car.. the only thing you have to watch out for is corners, with suv’s you have to take it easy around turns. thats the most common issue with suv’s is that people think they are sedans and dont take in account the higher center of gravity and flip. but honestly its a great car, very reliable and it handles great.
